Chromium is probably the most poorly sold trace element on the shelf. It is associated with promises of weight loss, appetite suppression, and "sugar regulation" – even though European regulations only permit two formulations, neither of which mentions weight. This article explains what chromium does, what it doesn't do, at what dose, for how long, and in which cases it should not be taken.

    What exactly is chromium?

Chromium is a trace element: a mineral that the body needs in tiny quantities, on the order of a few tens of micrograms per day. A microgram is one-thousandth of a milligram. By comparison, magnesium requirements are measured in hundreds of milligrams – about ten thousand times more.

This order of magnitude is not a minor detail: it explains why deficiency is rare, why supplement dosages seem enormous compared to the reference, and why the subject deserves more nuance than "take it, it can't hurt."

The European reference nutrient value is set at 40 µg per day. This figure is used as the basis for the percentage displayed on labels.

The only two authorized claims in Europe

European Regulation 432/2012 governs what a manufacturer is allowed to write. For chromium, only two claims are authorized:

    • "Chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism"
    • "Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels"

Read the word normal; it is not decorative. A maintenance claim refers to the functioning of a healthy body. It does not mean that a supplement corrects disturbed blood glucose levels, and it certainly does not replace any medical treatment.

These claims can only be used if the product provides at least 15% of the reference value per serving, i.e., 6 µg. Most supplements significantly exceed this threshold.

    Does chromium cause weight loss?

This is the question that brings most people to this topic, and the answer is a single sentence: no claims for weight control, appetite reduction, or fat mass loss are authorized for chromium in Europe.

This is not an oversight by the legislator. Authorization requests have been submitted in this area; they were unsuccessful due to insufficient evidence. What exists in the literature are heterogeneous studies on different populations, with weak and inconsistent effects on appetite or body composition.

In other words: if a salesperson presents chromium to you as a weight loss product, they are selling you something that regulations prohibit them from writing on the packaging. Weight loss depends on caloric deficit, protein intake, and sleep – not on a trace element. Our weight loss section exists, and we say the same thing at the counter: supplements come after the dietary framework, never in its place.

Picolinate, chloride, yeast: which form to choose?

Chromium is never present alone in a supplement: it is linked to a carrier molecule, and this linkage gives its name to the form.

Chromium picolinate combines chromium with picolinic acid. It is by far the most common form, chosen for its stability and good bioavailability. This is the one we have in stock: IO Genix Chromium Picolinate, at 200 µg per capsule.

Chromium chloride is an inorganic form, less well absorbed. It is still found in some multi-ingredient formulas, often because it is cheaper.

Chromium from enriched yeast is presented as a "natural" form. Its real benefit compared to picolinate has not been convincingly established, and the exact content is more variable.

In practice, the question of the form is secondary to two others: do you need it, and are you not already taking it elsewhere without knowing it?

    What foods contain chromium?

Before asking what supplement to buy, it's worth looking at your diet. The most regular food sources are:

    • meats, especially offal
    • whole grains and wholemeal bread
    • nuts: walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds
    • legumes and green vegetables
    • egg yolk and some cheeses
    • brewer's yeast, often cited as the densest source

One point that explains the general confusion on the subject: contents vary enormously from one sample to another, depending on the soil, cultivation method, and refining. Cereal refining, in particular, removes a large part of the chromium. A diet mainly composed of highly processed products therefore mechanically provides less.

How to know if you are deficient in chromium?

Honest answer: it's not easy to know, and it's rare. There is no reliable and interpretable routine blood test for chromium status, unlike iron or vitamin D. Documented deficiencies mainly concern particular medical situations, such as prolonged artificial nutrition without supplementation.

What can reasonably be said is that a lower intake is plausible in someone whose diet is highly processed, very poor in whole grains and nuts. This is not a diagnosis; it is a hypothesis.

Therefore, the question needs to be reversed. Instead of "am I deficient in chromium?", ask yourself: "am I not already taking it?" Most complete multivitamins contain it, often at a level close to the reference. Many fat burner formulas also contain it. Stacking three products that each contain it is the most common mistake in this category, and it happens without anyone noticing.

Dosage, timing of intake and duration of treatment

The dose. Market supplements most often revolve around 200 µg per serving, which is five times the reference value. This is not an anomaly; it's the category standard — but it's a figure to look at squarely rather than considering it a selling point. For a trace element, more is not better.

The timing. During a meal, never on an empty stomach. Two reasons: digestive comfort, as a concentrated trace element can cause gastric discomfort on an empty stomach; and consistency, since chromium is involved in macronutrient metabolism, it's best to take it when these macronutrients arrive.

Coffee. It is recommended to leave a one-hour gap with coffee and tea: caffeine and tannins can interfere with the absorption of several minerals. In practice, the simplest is to shift the intake to lunchtime rather than trying to fit it between two morning coffees.

The duration. A bottle of 100 capsules covers a little over three months at one per day. This is also the duration after which it is reasonable to reassess, with a possible one-month break before resuming. A course that lasts indefinitely without questioning why it is taken is no longer a course; it's a habit.

    Side effects and contraindications

At the doses found in food supplements, in a healthy adult, chromium picolinate is generally well tolerated. Reported discomfort is mainly digestive—gastric discomfort, nausea—and most often occurs when taken on an empty stomach. Headaches are also mentioned.

Situations that require abstaining or seeking medical advice before taking any:

    • Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Manufacturers explicitly exclude these situations.
    • Children and adolescents. These products are reserved for adults.
    • Ongoing medical treatment, whatever it may be.
    • Medically monitored blood sugar or antidiabetic treatment. This is the most important point in this article. It is not because a claim mentions maintaining normal blood sugar that a supplement has its place alongside a treatment—in fact, it's quite the opposite. This question belongs to your doctor, not to a sports nutrition aisle.
    • Renal or hepatic insufficiency. Medical advice is essential.

Finally, a practical limitation: capsules are very often coated with animal-derived gelatin, which makes them unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans. This is all the more regrettable as these diets are sometimes cited among those that provide less chromium.

And the rule that applies to this entire section: never exceed the indicated daily dose, and stop immediately in case of adverse effects.

Chromium alone or multivitamin: what to choose?

This is the real purchasing decision, and it depends solely on what you are already taking.

If your goal is to cover overall nutritional needs, a complete multivitamin is more rational: it contains chromium at a level close to the reference, alongside twenty other micronutrients, for a lower total cost and one less capsule in your morning routine.

Chromium alone, highly dosed, addresses a different logic: a targeted intake, for a single element, because you know precisely why. Professional advice, a diet identified as poor in chromium sources. Not because the word "glycemia" appears somewhere on the label.

If you want to compare the labels in hand rather than on a screen, that's exactly what we do at the counter of our store in Vendargues, fifteen minutes from Montpellier: nine times out of ten, a multivitamin is already being taken, and the question of combining comes before that of purchasing.

    Frequently asked questions about chromium

What are the effects of chromium on the body?

Two effects are recognized in Europe: chromium contributes to normal macronutrient metabolism and to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. These are the only two authorized formulations, and they concern the normal functioning of a healthy person.

    Does chromium cause weight loss?

No. No claims for weight control or appetite reduction are authorized for chromium in Europe, and available studies do not show a reliable effect on body composition. Weight loss depends on caloric deficit and protein intake.

When should chromium picolinate be taken?

During a meal, never on an empty stomach, with a glass of water. Allow an hour between taking it and consuming coffee or tea, as caffeine and tannins can interfere with mineral absorption. Lunchtime is often the simplest time.

    Is 200 µg a lot?

It is five times the European reference nutritional value, set at 40 µg per day. This is the market standard, but it is a deliberately high dosage. For a trace element, a higher dose does not mean a better product.

How long does a course of chromium last?

A bottle of 100 capsules lasts a little over three months at one per day, which constitutes a reasonable evaluation period. A one-month break is then possible before resuming, if the intake is still meaningful.

    What foods contain chromium?

Meats and offal, whole grains, nuts, legumes, green vegetables, egg yolk, and brewer's yeast. Levels vary greatly, and grain refining removes a large portion of it.

How do you know if you are deficient in chromium?

There is no reliable routine blood test for chromium status, and deficiency is rare in a typical Western diet. The more useful question is whether you are already getting it through a multivitamin or a fat burner.

Is it dangerous to take chromium?

At food supplement doses and in a healthy adult, it is generally well tolerated; reported discomfort is mainly digestive. It is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, children, and people undergoing medical treatment, and it should not be taken without medical advice if blood sugar is medically monitored.

    Which chromium should I buy?

Picolinate is the most common and best-documented form in terms of stability and absorption. But the question of form comes after two others, more decisive: do you need it, and are you not already taking it in another product?

Can chromium be combined with a multivitamin?

It's possible but rarely useful, and it requires checking the total amount. Most complete multivitamins already contain it, as do many fat burners. Combining two or three sources without reading labels is the best way to exceed intake without knowing it.

If you have any doubts about the benefits of supplementation in your case, or if your blood sugar is being monitored, the right conversation is with your doctor. Regarding the product itself, its dosages, and how not to combine it foolishly, we are happy to discuss it at the counter. To be integrated into a varied and balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
