What is this 700 ml shaker with a mixing grid?

The 700 ml serves a specific purpose, and it is worth doing the sums. One scoop of protein is prepared in 250 to 300 ml. Two scoops in a row, for someone taking 50 g of powder, need 500 to 600 ml: that works here, and it does not in a 500 ml bottle. And a carbohydrate powder such as waxy maize calls for 500 to 700 ml for a single serving — without a shaker of this size, you have to split it in two.
The second thing that matters is the screw closure with a gasket. Shakers with clip-on lids pop open at the bottom of a bag as soon as any weight is put on them, and a litre of protein spilt over your gym kit is not something you recover from. A screw closure takes two seconds longer to fill and removes the problem entirely.
The drinking spout is the detail you only appreciate in use. How do you prepare a lump-free shake?

The filling order is the only rule that really matters, and it is the one almost everybody ignores. If you pour the powder in first and the water on top, the powder sticks to the bottom in a compact cake that the grid will struggle to break up. Liquid first, powder second: the powder disperses as soon as it hits the surface, and ten seconds is enough. Shake with the lid pointing up rather than horizontally: less pressure is put on the gasket, and the drinking spout stays dry. A few seconds of rest before opening lets the foam settle, which avoids an overflow when you go to drink — whey proteins foam a great deal, which is normal and says nothing about their quality.
Cleaning it straight away is not a comfort recommendation, it is what keeps your shaker alive. Protein left for twelve hours in a closed, lukewarm container develops a smell that never fully goes. If you cannot wash it right away, rinse it with clean water and leave the lid unscrewed: that is enough to avoid the worst.
For a proper clean: warm water and washing-up liquid, taking the mixing grid out to reach what has caught in it. Mixing grid or metal ball?
The two systems are fitted to almost every shaker on the market, and they are not equally good depending on how you use them.
The mixing grid is a fixed part that breaks the liquid up as it passes through. It has three concrete advantages: it makes no noise at all, it cannot be left behind in the sink after washing, and it does not scratch the plastic inside the shaker. It comes apart for cleaning, which is essential, and it is the system chosen here.
The metal ball, for its part, agitates more violently and copes better with very dense powders, such as certain caseins or certain gainers. In return, it makes an unmistakable racket in a changing room, it ends up marking the inside of the container, and it gets lost. That is the classic trade-off in this category.
When is the ball the better choice? When you regularly mix thick powders, or when you prepare gainers dosed at 100 g and above. Two points deserve comment, because they make the difference in day-to-day use.
The metal screw cap is the choice that sets this bottle apart from flip-top models. A flip-top always ends up leaking: the spring loosens, the seal warps, and the bottle empties into your gym bag. A screw cap with a gasket holds up over time, at the cost of one extra movement every time you drink. On a bottle of almost two litres carried full, that is the right trade-off.
The BPA- and DEHP-free claim refers to two compounds whose use in food-contact materials is regulated in Europe. The manufacturer also states compliance with EC Regulation 1935/2004, the reference text on materials intended to come into contact with foodstuffs. This is regulatory compliance, not a quality label: it is expected of any product sold legally, and it is good that it is stated.
A word about the hydration figures you come across everywhere on this type of page. The former description on this page claimed that you should drink “1 litre per hour of exercise” and that “performance declines from 1% dehydration onwards”. We have removed those statements, which are not universal rules: requirements vary enormously with temperature, intensity and the individual. How to choose a shaker?
A shaker is just a sealed cup, yet there are many poor models out there. Four criteria are enough to decide, and none of them concern the design.
Capacity. It should be chosen based on the volume of liquid, not the powder. A dose of protein powder is prepared with 250 to 350 ml: a 500 ml container is sufficient. A 600 to 700 ml model becomes useful as soon as you add carbohydrates, prepare a gainer, or drink your BCAAs during your workout. Beyond one liter, it's no longer a shaker but a bottle: the liquid no longer has room to agitate, and the mixing is less effective.
Mixing system. There are three types. The grid, a perforated plastic disc placed under the lid, breaks up lumps by forcing the liquid through it; it's quiet and easy to clean. The metallic spring ball mixes very effectively but rattles, rusts on cheap models, and can get lost. Finally, the absence of a system only works with very soluble powders—a clear whey or electrolytes pass through without a problem, but casein does not.
Sealing. This is the criterion that separates a good shaker from a bad one, and it cannot be judged from a photo. A screw-on lid holds better than a snap-on lid. A pouring spout with a solid cap holds better than a simple push-button stopper. The honest test: fill with water, close, turn upside down, and shake for ten seconds over the sink. Many models fail.

What materials, and should we be wary of plastic?
Almost all shakers are made of polypropylene (PP, code 5) or Tritan-type copolyester. These plastics are BPA-free and intended for food contact; the 1.9-liter bottle we reference also specifies the absence of DEHP and compliance with European food contact standards. A shaker sold by a specialized retailer in Europe complies with these rules: that's not where the risk lies.
The real issue is elsewhere, and it's mechanical. Scratched plastic retains residue: micro-scratches created by an abrasive sponge or very hot dishwasher washing provide bacteria and residual proteins with exactly the surface they need.
