Comme elle est liposoluble, elle se stocke — contrairement à la vitamine C — ce qui explique l'existence d'une limite de sécurité.

Quel est le rôle de la vitamine E dans l'organisme ?

Protéger les lipides des membranes cellulaires de l'oxydation, en interrompant la propagation des réactions radicalaires. C'est la seule fonction couverte par une allégation autorisée : « La vitamine E contribue à protéger les cellules contre le stress oxydatif ».

Quelle quantité de vitamine E par jour ?

L'EFSA retient un apport adéquat d'environ 13 mg par jour chez l'homme et 11 mg chez la femme ; la VNR d'étiquetage européenne est de 12 mg. Ces quantités sont couvertes par une alimentation ordinaire : une cuillère à soupe d'huile de tournesol et une poignée d'amandes suffisent. Le plafond compte davantage ici que le besoin : la limite supérieure de sécurité est de 300 mg d'alpha-tocophérol par jour, toutes sources confondues — et une capsule à 400 UI se situe déjà dans cette zone. Attention aux unités : 1 mg de d-alpha-tocophérol vaut environ 1,49 UI, si bien que 400 UI de forme naturelle représentent environ 268 mg.

Quand faut-il prendre de la vitamine E ?

Au cours d'un repas contenant des matières grasses, et c'est la seule règle qui compte : la vitamine E est liposoluble, son absorption dépend entièrement de la présence de lipides et des sels biliaires libérés à ce moment-là. À jeun ou sur un petit-déjeuner sans corps gras, une bonne partie de la dose est perdue. L'heure de la journée, elle, n'a aucune importance démontrée. Deux précisions pratiques : évitez de la prendre en même temps qu'un complément de fer à forte dose, le fer étant oxydant, et rappelez-vous qu'elle se stocke — une prise quotidienne régulière n'a rien d'obligatoire, contrairement à la vitamine C.

Quels sont les symptômes d'un manque de vitamine E ?

La carence en vitamine E est très rare chez une personne qui s'alimente normalement, et c'est la première chose à savoir : elle ne s'observe pratiquement que dans des contextes de malabsorption des graisses — mucoviscidose, maladies hépatiques ou pancréatiques, chirurgie digestive, maladies génétiques rares du transport de la vitamine. Les manifestations décrites dans ces situations sont neurologiques et musculaires : troubles de la coordination, faiblesse musculaire, atteinte des réflexes, parfois troubles visuels. Elles n'ont rien de commun avec la fatigue ou la peau terne parfois attribuées à un « manque de vitamine E » en ligne. Autrement dit : si vous mangez des huiles végétales et des oléagineux, la question ne se pose pas ; et si elle se pose vraiment, elle relève d'un médecin, pas d'un complément.

Quels aliments contiennent de la vitamine E ?

Les huiles végétales en premier lieu — germe de blé loin devant, puis tournesol, olive, colza —, les graines et les oléagineux, amandes, noisettes, graines de tournesol. Les produits animaux et les fruits et légumes en apportent peu.

Quel fruit contient de la vitamine E ?

Très peu, en réalité : les fruits frais ne sont pas une source de vitamine E, leur teneur en eau élevant et leur faible teneur en lipides l'interdisant. L'avocat est le mieux placé, avec environ 2 mg pour 100 g — vingt-cinq fois moins qu'une huile de tournesol. Viennent ensuite, très loin derrière, la mangue, le kiwi et la mûre, sous le milligramme. Les seules exceptions sont les fruits secs oléagineux, qui n'en sont pas vraiment au sens courant : amandes (20 à 25 mg), noisettes (15 à 20 mg), graines de tournesol (environ 30 mg). Pour couvrir vos besoins, cherchez du côté des huiles et des oléagineux, pas de la corbeille de fruits.

Où trouver de la vitamine E naturelle ?

Dans l'alimentation, dans les huiles de première pression conservées à l'abri de la lumière. Dans un complément, la mention à chercher est d-alpha-tocophérol — avec un seul « d ». Si l'étiquette indique dl-alpha-tocophérol, la forme est synthétique.

Qu'est-ce que l'acétate d'alpha-tocophérol ?

C'est de la vitamine E dont la fonction alcool a été estérifiée par un groupement acétate, ce qui la protège de l'oxydation pendant le stockage. L'ester est clivé dans l'intestin, et la vitamine libérée sous sa forme active. C'est donc bien de la vitamine E ; regardez simplement la lettre qui précède — d-alpha ou dl-alpha — pour savoir s'il s'agit de la forme naturelle ou synthétique.

La vitamine E est-elle dangereuse ?

Aux quantités apportées par l'alimentation, non. En complément, deux situations appellent la prudence : le dépassement de la limite de 300 mg par jour, et l'association à un traitement anticoagulant ou antiagrégant, qui impose un avis médical préalable. En dehors de ces cas, un dosage raisonnable chez un adulte en bonne santé ne pose pas de difficulté connue.

La vitamine E agit-elle sur la peau ?

Nous ne l'affirmerons pas, et personne n'en a le droit : la seule allégation autorisée en Europe pour la vitamine E porte sur la protection des cellules contre le stress oxydatif — rien sur la peau, les cheveux ou les ongles. C'est un point qui distingue nettement la vitamine E du zinc ou de la vitamine C, qui portent tous deux des allégations cutanées explicites. La vitamine E est par ailleurs un ingrédient cosmétique très courant, mais c'est un autre métier et un autre cadre réglementaire : huiles et sérums relèvent du règlement sur les produits cosmétiques, pas de celui des compléments alimentaires. Est-elle utile aux sportifs ?

L'exercice intense produit des espèces réactives de l'oxygène, ce qui a longtemps servi d'argument à la supplémentation antioxydante. Or cette production n'est pas qu'un déchet : elle sert aussi de signal déclenchant une partie des adaptations recherchées, et des travaux ont observé qu'une supplémentation à forte dose pouvait les atténuer. Les résultats ne sont pas unanimes, mais rien ne justifie des centaines de milligrammes après chaque séance. Peut-on l'associer à d'autres compléments ?

Oui, aux doses usuelles, et l'association avec la vitamine C a même une base réglementaire, comme expliqué plus haut. Faites simplement l'addition de vos sources : beaucoup de multivitamines en contiennent déjà, tout comme certaines formules d'oméga 3, où elle sert aussi de conservateur naturel pour protéger les huiles.
