What are essential amino acids?

The proteins in your body are assembled from twenty amino acids. Your body can produce eleven of them from other molecules. The other nine, it cannot: it lacks the synthesis pathways for these, and they must therefore come from food. These are essential amino acids, or EAAs (Essential Amino Acids).

Here they are: leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, threonine, phenylalanine, tryptophan, histidine. The first three are branched-chain amino acids, better known as BCAAs.

The key principle is stated in one sentence: protein synthesis stops as soon as a single essential amino acid is missing. This is the limiting factor principle. Leucine may send the building signal—that's its role, and why it's highlighted everywhere—but if lysine or methionine are not available, the chain will not assemble. Building muscle requires all nine, together.

This is exactly what separates an EAA product from a BCAA product. BCAAs provide only three out of the nine. They trigger the signal without delivering the building blocks. EAA or whey: which to choose?

This is an honest question, and the answer doesn't favor the average shopping cart. Whey is already a complete source of essential amino acids. This is not a marketing approximation: whey protein contains all nine EAAs, in good proportions, with a high leucine content. A dose of whey isolate or concentrated whey provides the full spectrum.

And it does so for less money. Free amino acids are produced by fermentation or extraction, purified one by one, then recombined: this is a costly process. Per gram of essential amino acids actually supplied, a tub of whey is significantly cheaper than a tub of EAAs. For most exercisers, a dose of whey already covers their EAA needs, at the best price. Five situations genuinely justify them.

Fasted training

If you train in the morning without having eaten, your blood does not contain available essential amino acids. An EAA drink sipped during the session provides them without requiring digestion and without the heaviness of a meal in your stomach. This is the strongest use case, and one where BCAAs are, on the contrary, most unsuitable, as six out of nine amino acids would be missing.

Long sessions

Beyond 75 to 90 minutes of effort, intake during the session makes sense. A drink combining EAAs, electrolytes, and possibly fast-absorbing carbohydrates like maltodextrin or cyclic dextrin can be consumed without discomfort, unlike a protein shake.

Difficult digestion

Some people don't tolerate whey: poorly managed lactose intolerance, bloating, a feeling of heaviness during exercise. Free-form EAAs require no digestive effort. Clear whey is the other option to consider in this case.

Vegan diet

Plant proteins are often limiting in a specific amino acid: lysine for cereals, methionine for legumes. Fermented EAAs fill this deficit in a targeted way, without animal products.

Calorie deficit

During a cutting phase, the goal is to preserve muscle mass with few calories available. EAAs provide the full spectrum for almost zero caloric load, which is useful when every calorie counts. They are the same amino acids as those found in meat, eggs, or fish, simply isolated and purified: a healthy adult finds nothing alien to their diet. At usual doses, reported effects are limited to digestive discomfort, especially with a large dose swallowed at once on an empty stomach. Real contraindications are medical: metabolic amino acid disorders, kidney failure, liver failure, pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing treatment. In these situations, only your doctor can advise, and self-medication has no place.

Where to find amino acids in food?

In all proteins, but not in the same proportions. Eggs, meats, fish, and dairy products provide all nine essentials in a profile close to human needs, with whey from milk being the most concentrated in leucine. On the plant side, soy, peas, and quinoa are complete; cereals tend to lack lysine and legumes methionine, hence the benefit of combining them throughout the day. How to make up for a protein deficiency?

Start by measuring rather than assuming: record your intake over three typical days. The common benchmark for a regular exerciser is between 1.6 and 2.2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Then distribute this over three to four servings of 25 to 40 g rather than concentrating everything in the evening.
