What is collagen, and why is it taken hydrolyzed?

Does collagen work on the skin?

This is the most frequently asked question in the category, and the answer is the same as above: no "skin" claim is authorized for ingested collagen. The only legal claim on the subject concerns vitamin C, which contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin. What is established is that the skin is largely made of type I collagen, and that this collagen degrades with age, smoking, and unprotected sun exposure. Of these three factors, sun protection and quitting smoking have a documented effect that no supplement can match.

Does collagen lighten skin?

No, and there is no data to suggest it. This idea circulates mainly around products sold outside Europe that combine collagen with depigmenting agents — it is to these latter that the desired effect is attributed, not to collagen, and some of them are banned in the European Union because they are dangerous. Hydrolyzed collagen legally sold in France is a food protein: it has no effect on pigmentation. Be wary of imported products that promise this.

What is the origin of collagen, and who makes it?

Two answers, depending on what is meant by that. In the body, it is made by your own cells: fibroblasts for skin, tendons, and ligaments; chondrocytes for cartilage; osteoblasts for bone. They assemble amino acids into chains, then into a triple helix, with vitamin C as an essential cofactor. In a supplement jar, the origin is always animal: fish skins and scales for marine, bovine skins and bones for bovine, chicken sternum for type II. There is no plant-based or synthetic collagen in this market.

How to produce collagen naturally?

Your body continuously produces it itself, from amino acids — glycine, proline, lysine — and vitamin C, which acts as a cofactor for synthesis enzymes. Three conditions favor it, and none is a supplement: sufficient protein intake throughout the day, adequate vitamin C intake, and limiting factors that degrade existing collagen — primarily smoking and unprotected sun exposure. Nothing you swallow directly becomes the collagen in your skin: the body makes its own.

How to take collagen, when and at what dose?

The timing has no proven importance: morning, evening, on an empty stomach or with a meal, only regularity matters. Published protocols most often use 2.5 g to 10 g of hydrolyzed peptides per day, in a single dose, diluted in cold water, coffee, or yogurt. Follow the dose indicated by the manufacturer: a patented ingredient is often dosed around 2.5 g, a generic hydrolysate rather around 10 g. In terms of duration, studies run for at least 8 to 12 weeks, and there's no need for breaks: the question is budgetary.

What are the dangers of collagen?

There are no identified dangers at usual doses in healthy adults: it is a food protein, generally well tolerated. The most frequent complaints are digestive and benign—heaviness, bloating, aftertaste. Two real points of vigilance: fish allergy contraindicates marine collagen, and a high protein intake requires medical advice in cases of kidney failure, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or long-term treatment. The real risk in this market is not health-related, it is commercial: paying a lot for promises that no European claim authorizes.

What foods are rich in collagen?

Animal connective tissues: pork rinds, veal feet, hock, chicken wings with skin, whole fish with their skin, and long-simmered bone broths, which release it in the form of gelatin. No plant-based food contains it. Two limitations: you will never know how many grams you consumed, and this gelatin is not hydrolyzed, so it's less directly absorbable than peptides.

Why take collagen?

The honest answer is two-fold. No health claim is authorized in Europe for collagen: therefore, we cannot tell you that it acts on skin, joints, hair, or nails, and no seller can legally do so. What is established, however, is that hydrolyzed peptides are absorbed, and that they provide an abundance of glycine, proline, and lysine that the body uses to produce its own collagen. Many people take it on this basis, with full knowledge. If your motivation is an established pain or discomfort, talk to a doctor first.

What is the best collagen to take?

The one whose label shows a real dose of peptides per serving, an identified origin, and a short ingredient list. Specifically: check the grams of peptides per dose and not the weight of the serving, prefer powder over capsules as soon as the dose exceeds 2 or 3 g, and calculate the price per gram of peptides. A patented ingredient provides a documented dose by the manufacturer, a well-dosed generic is cheaper. None benefits from an authorized claim: beware of those who promise them.

Marine or bovine, which is best?

Neither, in absolute terms. Marine if you exclude beef or want pure type I; bovine for types I and III, a more neutral taste, and a lower price per gram. In case of fish allergy, the decision is clear.

What is the difference between collagen and hyaluronic acid?

These are two distinct molecules in connective tissues. Collagen is a fibrous protein: it provides structure and resistance. Hyaluronic acid is a complex sugar, a glycosaminoglycan, which retains water in the matrix. Neither benefits from an authorized oral health claim in Europe, and there is no obligation to combine them: they are often sold together by commercial choice, not physiological necessity.

What are VERISOL and FORTIGEL?

These are ingredient brands, not finished product brands: bovine collagen hydrolysates from the same German manufacturer, with distinct peptide profiles and a recommended dose specific to each, often around 2.5g per day. You will find them mentioned on the label of supplements sold under other names. Their practical interest is traceability: the manufacturer publishes a dose, which avoids improvisation. They do not benefit from any authorized health claim in Europe, like the rest of collagen, and cost more per gram than a generic hydrolysate.

Is collagen cheaper at the pharmacy?

Not necessarily, and comparing advertised prices means nothing here. The only calculation that matters is the price per gram of peptides actually taken each day: a cheap pot dosed at 5g per serving is more expensive than a more expensive pot dosed at 10g. Then multiply by the number of servings in the container and you get a comparable monthly cost from one product to another. Capsule formats are almost always the most expensive at equal doses, as many are needed. We do not publish price comparisons: prices change too often for it to remain accurate.

Can you make collagen at home?

You can obtain it, but not strictly make it. Long cooking of bones, rinds, or veal feet releases gelatin, which is denatured collagen: this is the whole principle of bone broth. A good food otherwise, it never tells you how many grams you consumed, and this gelatin is not hydrolyzed — it remains a large molecule that digestion must break down. No homemade recipe reproduces enzymatic hydrolysis.

Should collagen be combined with vitamin C?

Vitamin C is the only combination whose role is recognized by European regulations: it contributes to normal collagen formation. Twelve milligrams per serving are enough to make the claim usable, and many powders already contain it. Beyond that, joint formulas often combine glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM. Magnesium, zinc, and omega 3 follow other logics: choose them for themselves.

Does collagen cause weight gain?

No. It's a protein: about 4 kcal per gram. A 10g dose therefore weighs around 40 kcal, the equivalent of half an apple, in a day that counts 2,000 or more; flavored versions rarely add more than ten calories.
