Isolate, concentrate, clear whey or casein: which to take?

This is the question that comes up most often at the counter, and it is the one that cannot be settled in front of a screen. In short:

• Whey concentrate is the most complete in terms of value for money. It keeps a little lactose and fat. For most people who train, it is the right default choice.
• Whey isolate is filtered more finely: very little lactose, a higher protein content per gram. It makes sense if concentrate sits heavily on your digestion, or during a cutting phase where every calorie counts.
• Clear whey is not drunk like a milk but like a fruity drink. It comes into its own when the idea of a creamy shaker after a session at 32 °C puts you off.
• Casein is slower to digest. It is an evening product, not a post-session product.
