Which supplements to take for bodybuilding? The guide by objective

When you first enter a sports nutrition store, there are three hundred products on the shelves, and it feels like you should buy everything. The truth is much simpler: two supplements are enough to cover the essentials, and everything else depends on a specific goal. This guide will therefore not give you a "top 10," but an answer by objective.

What supplements do, and what they don't do

A dietary supplement, as its name suggests, supplements. It creates nothing. If your training is not regular, if you sleep five hours a night, or if you eat randomly, no jar will compensate for that. However, when the foundation is there, supplements solve two very concrete problems: reaching your daily protein intake without spending your whole day doing it, and covering needs that modern diets poorly fulfill.

That's all. It's neither magic nor useless: it's a tool.

The only two truly essential supplements

If you were to take only two, these are the ones.

Protein powder. An athlete who trains seriously needs about 1.6 to 2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. For someone weighing 80 kg, that's 130 to 160 g daily, which is equivalent to six chicken breasts. Few people can maintain that solely through meals, week after week. A dose of whey provides 25 g of protein in thirty seconds and costs less per gram than most animal sources.

Creatine monohydrate. This is the most studied supplement in all of sports nutrition, with over thirty years of data. At 3 g per day, it helps improve performance during successive high-intensity, short-duration exercises. Translated to the gym: one or two extra repetitions, session after session, and over a year that counts. No loading phase, no cycles, no season: 3 g every day, including rest days.

These two products, plus a shaker, are exactly what our beginner pack contains. Not because we have to sell a pack, but because it's the honest answer to the question "where do I start?"

    Bulking goal: what to add?

If you're not gaining weight despite serious training, the problem is almost never the training: it's the total daily caloric intake. And the problem with total caloric intake is the volume of food to consume.

This is where a gainer becomes useful. A shaker can be drunk in two minutes, whereas the equivalent plate takes half an hour and curbs the appetite for the next meal. Alongside, a neutral carbohydrate source like rice cream allows you to increase calories from real meals, not just shakes.

The surplus to aim for is around 250 to 500 kcal above your needs. Beyond that, what's added is mostly fat. A kilo per month is a realistic pace, and that's already twelve kilos in a year. Gainer, creatine, and carbohydrates, that's the composition of our mass gain pack.

What if this isn't your first bulk?

Those who are on their second or third cycle rarely ask the same question. They are no longer looking to gain quickly: they are looking to gain without putting on as much fat as the previous round.

Here, a gainer with 1,100 kcal per serving is a bad tool. You need a more measured one, around 200 kcal, with oat carbohydrates rather than sugar, which complements already adequate meals instead of replacing them. Add EAAs for long sessions and a multivitamin, because a bulking phase often restricts dietary variety: you eat a lot, but always rice, pasta, chicken, oats. This is the logic of our intermediate mass gain pack, whose gainer already provides 3g of creatine and 6g of glutamine per serving—which is why there's no extra creatine pot in it.

    Cutting goal: what to add?

A cut is a caloric deficit maintained long enough, keeping protein high to protect muscle. Three things really help.

Whey isolate rather than concentrate: lots of protein, very little carbohydrates and lactose. In a deficit, every calorie counts. EAAs during the session, when the stomach is empty and a full shaker won't go down. And possibly a thermogenic burner, whose exact role must be understood: caffeine helps you feel more alert and get through sessions during periods of restriction. It's not what makes you lose weight, it's the deficit.

A reasonable pace is between 0.5 and 1% of body weight per week. Faster, what's lost is no longer just fat, and regaining it is almost automatic as soon as you let up. Eight to twelve clean weeks are better than a month of deprivation. These three products form our cutting pack.

Joints and recovery: the often-forgotten aspect

After a few years of training, it's no longer the muscle that limits you. It's the tendons, ligaments, and joints. They strengthen much more slowly than muscles, and that's exactly what explains most problems among those who progress quickly.

Collagen provides glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline that make up these tissues, which modern diets provide very little of: we mainly eat muscle, no longer the gelatinous parts. Turmeric and omega 3 complete the recovery. This is long-term work: you judge results after three months, not three weeks. This is the purpose of our joints and recovery pack.

    And everything else?

Boosters, standalone BCAAs, glutamine, tribulus, capsule burners: these are not bad products, but they are comfort products. They come later, once the foundation has been in place for several months and you know exactly what you're looking for. Starting with them is like putting the roof on before the walls.

    Are bodybuilding supplements dangerous?

This is the most frequently asked question at the counter, and it deserves a precise answer rather than a shrug.

Whey is milk from which water, lactose, and some fat have been removed. Creatine is a molecule naturally present in red meat and fish. At usual doses, in a healthy person, neither poses a problem, and this has been documented for decades.

The real points of vigilance are elsewhere: products containing caffeine, which should not be combined and should be avoided late in the day; plant extracts, which require reading contraindications; and special cases—pregnancy, breastfeeding, ongoing medical treatment, under 18—where medical advice is necessary. In all cases, these are food supplements: they do not replace a varied diet or medical advice.

Buy separately or in a pack?

Buying products one by one makes sense when you already know exactly what you want and why. A pack makes sense in two cases: when you are just starting and don't want to make a mistake with the combination, and when you change your objective and want the complete selection at once. Our five packs cost less than the sum of their individual products, and you choose the flavors of each yourself.

How much should you budget to get started well?

Around €60 for a full month with whey, creatine, and a shaker. Around €80 if the goal is mass gain, because the gainer is added. This is a real budget, but it compares to what the same amount of protein in meat or fish would cost, and then the calculation becomes much less impressive.

Are you in Montpellier or Hérault?

The simplest way is still to come and talk. Our store is at 285 Rue des Portes Domitiennes in Vendargues, about ten minutes from Montpellier, and we'll review your typical days, your budget, and your objective together before advising you on anything. If you prefer to order online, in-store pickup is ready within a maximum of two hours during opening hours, and any order placed before 2 PM ships the same day.
