    Glucosamine and chondroitin are two of the most popular references in the joint health section, and two of the ones about which the most unverifiable claims circulate. Good news right off the bat: they are well-tolerated supplements, and their consumption at usual doses does not pose a problem for healthy adults. Here's what these molecules are, at what dose they are used, how to recognize a correctly dosed formula, and the few situations that require a doctor's advice.

    What is glucosamine?

    Glucosamine is an aminosugar: a sugar molecule to which a nitrogen group is attached. The body produces it itself from glucose and glutamine. It is a component of glycosaminoglycans, these long sugar chains that, with collagen and water, form the cartilage matrix.

    In supplements, it is produced from crustacean shells — shrimp, crabs — or, more recently, by corn fermentation for vegetarian versions. This origin is not insignificant: it is the only real point of attention for the molecule, and it only concerns people with allergies.

    It comes in three main forms, and they are not interchangeable:

    Glucosamine sulfate. This is the most studied form, often stabilized with potassium chloride or sodium chloride. If you compare two products, this one has the most literature behind it.

    Glucosamine hydrochloride (or HCl). More concentrated in glucosamine per gram, but less studied.

    N-acetylglucosamine (NAG). An acetylated form that follows a different metabolic pathway, and which does not compare dose for dose to the previous two.

    And what is chondroitin?

    Chondroitin sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan, meaning a long chain of sugars—of which glucosamine is a part. It is one of the molecules that give cartilage its ability to retain water and absorb compression.

    In supplements, it is extracted from animal cartilage: bovine trachea, porcine cartilage, or fish cartilage. Its high molecular mass results in partial and variable intestinal absorption depending on the extraction processes. Two products claiming "1,200 mg of chondroitin" are therefore not necessarily equivalent—all the more reason to choose a formula whose origin is clearly indicated.

    This is also why the two molecules are almost always combined in the same formula, often with MSM (methylsulfonylmethane), a sulfur compound, and sometimes vitamin C—the latter being the only one of the lot to carry an authorized claim, that of contributing to normal collagen formation.

    What does European regulation say?

    Let's be direct, because this is where many sellers take liberties.

    No health claim is authorized in Europe for glucosamine, nor for chondroitin. The EFSA has examined dossiers submitted on the maintenance of joints and cartilage without identifying an established cause-and-effect relationship. Any page that tells you that glucosamine "repairs cartilage" or "stops wear and tear" is selling you a promise it has no right to make.

    What this does not mean: that the product would pose a problem. The absence of an authorized claim is a matter of the level of evidence required to promise an effect, not a safety signal. This is a nuance we prefer to explain rather than circumvent.

    Glucosamine and chondroitin: what are the real risks?

    This is the most frequently asked question, and the answer is rather reassuring.

    In healthy adults, at usual doses, tolerance is good. Reported side effects are mainly digestive and mild: bloating, nausea, heartburn, more frequent on an empty stomach. Taking the capsules with a meal resolves most of the problem.

    There remain three situations where you should seek advice before starting.

    Crustacean allergy. Glucosamine from shells may contain traces of crustacean proteins. The risk is debated — the main allergen, tropomyosin, is found in the flesh more than in the shell — but if you are allergic, the rule is simple: choose a form obtained by plant fermentation, clearly labeled.

    Anticoagulants. This is the best-documented interaction: cases of increased INR have been reported with warfarin when taking glucosamine, alone or combined with chondroitin. If you are taking an anticoagulant, this combination should be discussed with your doctor.

    Diabetes. Glucosamine is a glucose derivative, which has raised concerns about an effect on blood sugar. Studies in non-diabetic subjects have not confirmed any notable alteration at usual doses. In a diabetic person, usual monitoring is generally sufficient, with the treating doctor's agreement.

    In addition, there are standard precautions: pregnancy, breastfeeding, and minors. Due to insufficient data, these products are not intended for them.

    What quantity per day?

    The dosages used in the literature are remarkably consistent: 1,500 mg of glucosamine per day, taken once or divided into three doses, and 800 to 1,200 mg of chondroitin. MSM, when added, is around 1,000 to 1,500 mg.

    Two practical consequences.     How long before judging the effect?

    This is the most useful point on this page, and the one that prevents wasting money.

    Published protocols span at least two to three months. None describe an effect in a few days. A joint product judged over one week will never be judged correctly — and that's exactly what costs a lot: you buy it, you don't feel anything after ten days, you change brands, and you start over.

    The form is named. "Glucosamine" alone is not enough: sulfate, hydrochloride, or N-acetyl are not the same thing.

    The origin is indicated. Crustaceans or plant fermentation for glucosamine; bovine, porcine, or marine for chondroitin.

    There is no proprietary blend. A "joint complex" that announces 2,000 mg without detailing the proportion of each ingredient may contain 1,900 mg of the cheapest.

    The promises remain within the legal framework. A brand that writes that its product "regenerates cartilage" is mainly telling you that it ignores the regulations.
