What is GAT Sport Nitraflex Original?

GAT Sport Nitraflex Original is a powdered pre-workout, sold in a 300 g tub, which is thirty 10 g doses. It is one of the oldest formulas still on sale in this category, and the American brand has not touched it in years — which, in a category where everything is reformulated every eighteen months, says something.

The composition falls into two blocks. The first brings together the nitric oxide precursors: L-citrulline, Nitrosigine® (an arginine and inositol silicate), resveratrol and pterostilbene. The second is the stimulant and cognitive side: beta-alanine, L-tyrosine, caffeine anhydrous, DMAE bitartrate, L-theanine and Rauwolfia vomitoria root extract. Added to these is 200 mg of calcium fructoborate. The flavours on offer: Green Apple, Blue Raspberry, Fruit Punch and Watermelon.

One honest point up front: GAT publishes a proprietary blend. Six actives are quantified to the milligram, the rest are not. We set out below what is known and what is not. The product joins our boosters range.

The figure that shapes everything else is the 325 mg of caffeine per dose. The manufacturer itself compares it to more than three cups of coffee, and it is right to spell that out. EFSA regards 200 mg as a single serving that raises no safety concern in a healthy adult, and 400 mg for the whole day: one dose of Nitraflex puts you above the first reference point and at 80% of the second, before you have even had your morning coffee.

On the nitric oxide precursors, let us be blunt: 1 g of citrulline is a modest dose. Formulas that stake everything on the pump use four to six times as much. Nitraflex is not playing on that ground, it is playing on stimulation — which is coherent, but you need to know it before buying. The 1,500 mg of beta-alanine are likewise below the usual dosages for the category, and are mainly enough to produce the characteristic tingling.

No health claim is authorised in Europe for citrulline, arginine, beta-alanine, tyrosine, theanine, DMAE, resveratrol or calcium fructoborate. So we describe the formula, not any promised effects.

How should Nitraflex be dosed?

Dose: 1 scoop of 10 g, and never more than one per 24-hour period. Liquid: 250 ml of cold water. Timing: 30 minutes before the session. Frequency: one serving per training day. Duration: continuous use is possible, with a one-week break every two months to preserve your sensitivity to stimulants.

The first time, take a half dose in 150 ml of water. The manufacturer says so and we would stress it: 325 mg of caffeine swallowed in one go by someone unaccustomed to it means shaking, a racing heart and a wasted session. Move up to the full dose on the following days if all goes well.

Another instruction to follow: do not take it within the 5 hours before bedtime. If you train at 20:00, this product is not for you — look instead at the caffeine-free booster range. Mix it with cold water, drink it straight away, and expect beta-alanine tingling within twenty minutes: it passes and it is harmless.

Who is Nitraflex for, and who is it not for?

It is aimed at trained adults, used to stimulants, whose first priority is energy and focus for heavy sessions in the morning or early afternoon. It is a product for alertness, not for the pump.

The restrictions are clear-cut. Use is strictly prohibited in pregnant and breastfeeding women. Not recommended for under-18s or for people sensitive to caffeine. Medical advice is mandatory before use if you are on any treatment, or have high blood pressure or cardiac, kidney or liver disorders. The product may contain traces of GLUTEN, MILK, EGGS and SOYA, as the manufacturing facility handles these allergens. It keeps for 36 months in its sealed original packaging, in a dry place away from light.

What you should not expect from it. First, a spectacular pump: with 1 g of citrulline, that is not the formula's strong point. Second, any effect on body composition or on hormones — nothing in this composition supports such a statement, and we will not make one. And finally, a way of making up for bad nights: caffeine masks tiredness, it does not remove it, and the bill comes due sooner or later.

Nitraflex or a pump-focused pre-workout?

The question genuinely arises, because the two products carry the same category label without doing the same job.

A pump-focused pre-workout — the formulas with 4, 6 or 8 g of citrulline — is the better choice in three cases. You work in long sets and you are after the sensation of muscle swelling. You are already very sensitive to caffeine and you want the effect without the jitters. Or you train in the evening, a case where a product from the creatine-free pre-workout range or a non-stimulant formula is the obvious answer. On the citrulline dosage alone, Nitraflex is clearly outclassed, and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise.

Nitraflex keeps the advantage when what you want is nervous-system stimulation: 325 mg of caffeine in a dose of only 10 g, paired with tyrosine and theanine, is a density few formulas reach without pushing the scoop up to 20 g. It also wins on simplicity — thirty doses, one scoop, nothing to calculate — and on the two patented ingredients that really are quantified, Nitrosigine® at 250 mg and calcium fructoborate at 200 mg. The amino acids that make up these formulas are also available on their own, in our beta-alanine and L-arginine ranges, if you would rather build your own blend.

Frequently asked questions

How many doses are in a tub?

Thirty. The tub weighs 300 g and the dose is 10 g. At three sessions a week, that covers about ten weeks; at five sessions, six weeks. Do not forget the one-week break every two months recommended by the manufacturer.

Is 325 mg of caffeine a lot?

Yes. It is more than the 200 mg reference adopted by EFSA for a single serving in a healthy adult, and the equivalent of three to four espressos. If you already drink coffee during the day, add it all up before taking the full dose, and start with half a scoop.

Why is the citrulline dosed at only 1 g?

Because the formula is not staking anything on the pump. GAT built Nitraflex around stimulation and focus, and allocates its active-ingredient budget accordingly. If the pump is what you are after, this is not the right product, and we would rather tell you here than let you find out by your third tub.

Is the tingling normal?

Yes, it comes from the 1,500 mg of beta-alanine and appears fifteen to twenty minutes after taking it, on the face and forearms. The sensation lasts around half an hour, fades with regular use and has no known consequences.

What are the dosages of the other actives?

They are not published. L-tyrosine, DMAE, L-theanine, Rauwolfia vomitoria extract, resveratrol and pterostilbene sit inside a proprietary blend whose breakdown GAT does not detail. Six actives are quantified, the rest are not: that is the limit of this label.

Can it be taken on non-training days?

There is no point. The product is designed to be taken 30 minutes before a session, and the limit of one dose per 24 hours applies in any case. On rest days, save your caffeine allowance for something else.

Which flavour should you choose?

Fruit Punch and Watermelon are the easiest to drink; Green Apple and Blue Raspberry are sharper. At 10 g in 250 ml the drink stays concentrated: if the bitterness bothers you, go up to 300 ml, it changes nothing about how well it works.
