What is GAT Sport Nitraflex Advanced?

GAT Sport Nitraflex Advanced is a powdered pre-workout, to be mixed with water before the session. One 10.3 g dose supplies 325 mg of anhydrous caffeine, 6,521 mg of a proprietary blend and 200 mg of boron citrate, for 15 kcal. The flavours in the catalogue: Green Apple and Watermelon.

GAT Sport is an American brand, and Nitraflex is its long-standing pre-workout range. The Advanced version is the most heavily loaded of the line: it keeps the caffeine level of the original formula and adds several ingredients from the stimulant and neuro-active families. This is a product for the experienced user, not a first purchase.

A point of vocabulary, because it matters: this formula contains no creatine. Unlike many pre-workouts, it is built on citrulline, arginine silicate and caffeine. What does one dose of Nitraflex Advanced contain?

325 mg of caffeine is the figure to take in before all the others. That amounts to about four cups of coffee in a single scoop. For reference, the European Food Safety Authority takes 200 mg as a single intake with no adverse effect in a healthy adult, and 400 mg across the day as a whole. One dose of this product therefore puts you well above the first threshold, and at eighty per cent of the second — before your morning coffee.

The 6,521 mg proprietary blend raises the opposite problem: the total is known, the detail is not. It contains L-citrulline, inositol-stabilised arginine silicate as Nitrosigine®, resveratrol, pterostilbene, beta-alanine, L-tyrosine, DMAE bitartrate, L-theanine and a root extract of Rauwolfia vomitoria. Not one of those lines is quantified individually. It is a common formulation choice in this category, and it is the one we criticise most: without doses, there is no way to know whether citrulline is present at 4 g or at 400 mg, nor where beta-alanine sits relative to the 3.2 g usually used.

Two ingredients on that list deserve to be named outright. DMAE bitartrate and Rauwolfia vomitoria extract — a plant whose alkaloids are related to yohimbine — are components whose status in food supplements differs from one European country to another and which are subject to restrictions in France. We are not glossing over them: if you are on any treatment, if you have the slightest cardiovascular or blood-pressure vulnerability, this product must be discussed with a doctor before it is bought, and not after.

On the regulatory side, there is nothing to claim: no health claim is authorised in Europe for caffeine, citrulline, arginine, beta-alanine, tyrosine, theanine, resveratrol or boron. How do you take Nitraflex Advanced?

First use: half a scoop in 150 ml of cold water. Dose thereafter: 1 scoop of 10.3 g in 250 ml of cold water. Timing: 30 minutes before the session. Frequency: one dose per 24 hours at most. Duration: cycles of 8 to 12 weeks, followed by one to two weeks off.

You must start at the half dose. That is not a polite formality: at 325 mg of caffeine, someone unaccustomed to it can end up with palpitations, tremors and a ruined session. Half a scoop is still 160 mg, which is already a complete pre-workout at many brands. Move up only if you tolerated it well.

Nothing to be taken in the six hours before bedtime. Caffeine acts over a long window, and at this dose a 19:00 session is paid for very concretely during the night. Who is Nitraflex Advanced for, and who is it not for?

It is aimed at a trained adult, used to heavily dosed pre-workouts, looking for a strongly stimulating product for heavy sessions. It is a niche product, and it makes no secret of that.

It is not suitable for under-18s, or for pregnant or breastfeeding women. The manufacturer formally advises against it in cases of cardiovascular disorders, high blood pressure, psychiatric disorders, epilepsy or prostate problems. Those are its own words, and that list is not token caution: it follows directly from the nature of the ingredients.

Nor is it suitable if you are sensitive to caffeine, if you sleep badly, or if you are on any treatment at all — antihypertensive, antidepressant, thyroid medication. In all these cases, advice from a doctor or pharmacist comes before the purchase. The presence of DMAE and a Rauwolfia extract makes that consultation all the more necessary.

What you should not expect from it. A pre-workout does not make you progress: it makes a session more pleasant to start, nothing more. It does not make up for poor sleep, or for insufficient food, or for a badly built programme. A beta-alanine dosed at 3.2 g a day, a citrulline at 6 g before the session and possibly a coffee comes to a pre-workout whose every line you know.
